FOTD - School

My eyebrows have been getting progressively worse since I started the blog, but that's good! I'm growing them out!

Back in November, my sister and I bought a few beauty salon coupons off street salesperson. If it sounds like a bad idea, it probably is! The place ended up being no good...I got a haircut and an eyebrow wax and they managed to botch BOTH by burning me. The hairstylist burt my scalp and the wax lady burnt my eyebrows -_- The first apologized, but when I told the second lady the wax was too hot, all she said was "that's how it's supposed to be." UH..no! I've had my eyebrows waxed before!!

Anywho..my eyebrows have been a mess and I thought for a while they were not gonna grow back, but here they are again!

So sorry for the hairy mess. I promise it'll be gone the next time I post :)

Here's my FOTD:

Products used for the look:

Face
Laura Mercier Tinted Foundation in Sand
MAC Pleasureful Cream Blush
MAC Fix +

Eyes
MAC Painterly Paint Pot
MAC Woodwinked
MAC Swiss Chocolate
MAC Mulch
Urban Decay Eyeliner in Bourbon

I was being pretty lazy today. No face primer, no concealer, no mascara...lazy, lazy. Today's just one of those sleepy Mondays. It's also been quite a few hours, so the makeups a bit faded. Wish I had taken a picture before I went out for the day! Next time!

Coming Up

With the help of my amazing husband, I now have my site banner! Yay!

It's been a week since I last posted. I haven't felt too motivated to write, but this banner has helped pick that excitement back up again. :)

What have I been up to?

I'm back in school, officially working towards my Bachelors degree and loving it (though not loving the distance I travel to get to the school)!

I'm also the matron of honor in my sister's wedding and I've been helping with that a bit. My main train of thoughts recently, of course, is the makeup for the day of. I have no clue where to start with that, but it's exciting!

Also on my mind: IMATS! I won't be able to make it to the one in NY, but I'm hoping that I can go to the one in California. It seems like a lot of fun...all those vendors and classes and people to meet. I'm planning ahead and saving, saving so that I'll make this a reality this year!

FOTD - Date Night

Here's another date night FOTD! I decided to go all out for this one and try out a more dramatic look, which I learned at the MAC counter at Macy's haha.

Ah! Background check! Points for everyone who guesses what's on top of my dresser (Hint: lots of bottles yet to be sorted!)

This is me without my glasses on, hopefully giving you a better look at what the eye makeup looked like! My skin looks a bit shiny here, because I got a little too generous with the highlighter. Whoops!

Picked up a few beauty books at the library before work today. :) Hopefully I'll learn a lot from these. I'll be posting the best tidbits throughout the month.

Myglam - January 2012

Today I received my very first MyGlam bag! I signed up last month, too late for December's bag, but just in time for this one. As far as I know, subscription availability is on and off, because the program is run by a group of Youtube makeup gurus and this is their first time taking on a project like this. If you're interested, follow their twitter (they seem to be the best at updates there) or their facebook (they've had quite a few giveaways already).

This is my first month receiving the MyGlam bag and, while I think it could have been better, I'm satisfied.

Included this month:
Freeman Cucumber Facial Peel-off Masque
Wen Sweet Almond Mint Cleansing Conditioner
theBalm Cosmetics nail polish in Hot Ticket
Sheer Cover Duo Concealer in Medium

Freeman Cucumber Facial Peel-off Masque
  • After having used it once, I can't say whether I like it or not. So, I'll start with the basics. I love that the girls included a full size bottle of this masque. I think it's especially hard to see the longterm effects for skin products without having a full size or "deluxe" size version of the product. I feel these subscription services are all about trying new things and I've never used a peel-off masque before, so this product was a huge plus for me.
  • I wasn't a fan of the smell, but there may be a better smelling alternative. Who knows?

  • The application was very messy. Not because of the process, but because the bottle kept dripping the masque everywhere! It made it difficult to apply the masque, because I was trying not to make a mess while applying. (My suggestion to them would be to get another container, because IMO this one is no good).

  • The overall decision on this masque is still up in the air, because after one use I don't see that big of an improvement or change (good or bad). If I had to decide right now, I'd say I'm not too impressed by this masque.

Wen Sweet Almond Mint Cleansing Conditioner
  • I switched out my regular conditioner (Organix Coconut Milk Conditioner) today to try out Wen's. Again, this is another product I'll have to try more than once to decide whether I like it or not. I'm very happy with my shampoo, but have been wanting to try a different conditioner, so I'm glad this was included in the bag.
theBalm Cosmetics nail polish in Hot Ticket
  • I'll admit it: I haven't used this yet! I'm not a big fan of nail polish. I usually go for the classic french tip or even more classic lazy-no-polish. I definitely do plan on wearing it this week, though! Who knows? I may end up liking this color or, if not, liking the quality and ending up purchasing a different polish. :)
  • It seems like it would work for most, if not all skintones. Also, this is a GREAT polish for Summer!

Sheer Cover Duo Concealer in Medium
  • I was a little disappointed to receive this concealer in the bag, because I just spent the last week looking for a new one...and bought it a few days ago.
  • The colors are a bit off. I wish they had been customized to each subscriber's needs, but I know that's a lot to ask (especially for a low-cost sub service that is just starting out). I'm glad that for me the colors aren't too far off the mark, but disappointed for those girls who it won't work for; if you are any darker than I am, more than likely it won't work for you.

**Overall, I'm simply 'satisfied' for now, because I like the products that were included but I do have to use them a few more times in order to see if they work for me or not.

ALSO,

A lot of people were disappointed the masque was included because it isn't a high-end brand, but MyGlam never promised subscribers exclusively high-end brands. Their program is about giving their subscribers access to brands and products they might not have tried yet..and that's exactly what this entire bag was for me. I would have never tried any of these products and that alone, or their price in stores, does not make it a bad product.

FOTD - Window Shopper

This was a quick Face of the Day. My husband and I went to check out computers since my laptop seems to be spiraling down now. It's had a heating problem for a while and now the fan stopped working, which I guess you could say made the problem worse.

Anywho, here's my FOTD for last night:

Face
Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer in Sand
Sonia Kashuk Hidden Agenda Concealer
Bare Escentuals Mineral Veil in Illuminating
MAC Sweet as Cocoa

Eyes
Nothing

Lips
NYX Lip Pencil in Natural
MAC Caqui Lipglass

Not sure why I look so glowwy. I need a better camera haha, but it looks nice!

Foundations. Where do you start?

When I first began my trek into this makeuperry world, I though "Hey, foundation...not too dark, not too light, so medium...check. Concealer, one shade lighter than foundation...check." I thought that was all there was to it. Unfortunately, it's not so simple.

Here are the tips I've picked up;

1. Don't follow trends, find what works for YOU and YOUR skin type.

Finding the right combination of skin coverage is a long process and not one that necessarily follows the trends. It's tricky because you can't base your own coverage products on someone else's favorites. In a way it seems almost obvious; you should be basing your coverage products on what looks and works best on YOU and for YOUR skin type. Maybe we're all just stubborn. I think that's why it's taken me a while to figure out what works for me.

I got my first foundation at the drug store. I ended up breaking out and put off foundation until years later. But it wasn't the foundation, it was my fault. I should have realized that getting an Oil-free foundation when you have very dry skin is a bad idea. Lesson learned!

2. Pick your foundation based on each brand. Don't assume that you are a 'medium' in all brands.

I've always struggled with my skin tone. I love the fact that I come from a mixed heritage, but at times it's been difficult to find a color match because of those different pieces each pulling me in a different direction.

Medium. Medium-Olive. Olive. Medium-Tan. Tan. Bisque. Sand. Desert. Almond. Beige. NC. NW. Orange. Yellow. Purple.

Last week, I spent an hour at ULTA trying to find my color in Revlon's Colorstay foundation. I eventually asked for help and was out of there, only to find later that the foundation is a bit dark.
To be fair, I think the tester may have been from an earlier version of the foundation because it did look slightly dissimilar to the one I have at home. On the bright side? It'll probably work perfectly during the summer!

3. Our skin can be dry/oily/sensitive/combination overall, but not all the time. Adjust your foundation/concealer accordingly!

Which brings me to my next point: our skin is constantly changing! Well, maybe not constantly... Our skin gets lighter during Winter (unless you tan) and darker during summer (especially if you tan); it gets oilier during Summer and drier during Winter. You shouldn't use your face-oil-sucking-foundation during Winter when your skin is dry, because that would make your skin look worse! You also wouldn't throw on that dewy-nature-girl-just-got-done-mowing-the-lawn-in-90-degree-weather foundation during an unnaturally hot summer day, because you'd look like you just...mowed the lawn in 90 degree weather.

4. Keep a skincare regimen!

As amazing as that foundation is, it will not look great on you if you don't take care of your skin, first and foremost. One of the top celeb beauty secrets is, guess what? Washing the makeup off their face, washing their face EVERY night. I get it, we all get lazy around bedtime, but we can't expect our makeup to do all the work! If you don't wash it off, wipe all that eyemakeup off, put primer on...it's all going to get into your skin. I keep a pack of drugstore wipes by my bed, just so that if I do feel lazy and tired, I can get it over with (but I dislike the feeling of the wipes, and that usually motivates me to go wash my face haha).

Phew! I'm sure I'll be updating this later, but I wanted to get most of this down before bed.

FOTD - Date Night

Not technically my "first" Face of the Day, but I guess in reference to this blog..it is! I wish I had a better camera (and better liquid eyeliner skills), but I'm proud of my look regardless. :)

It's pretty clear in the photos, I wasn't wearing any concealer. Honestly, there are quite a few makeup skills I'm working at, but I want this blog to be an encouragement to work on them...not necessarily to show off.

So hope you don't mind the occasional/often flubs!

Second

I hate the first entry. There's so much pressure to write some meaningful, emotionally driven, inspiring story.

Honestly.

This blog is for me. What'll it be about, I don't know...lots. And cats. Don't forget the cats.

Mostly, ramblings about makeup and my personal journey to that "she has nothing on her face oh-ma-gah" look we're all aiming for. And much more along the way, I'm sure.

Did I mention the cats?

First Post Awkwardness

Goodness.
